2020 has been… interesting (to say the least). I recently had a conversation with my mother that this year feels like we’re starring in a movie. A pandemic, closing borders, protesters filling the streets, uncomfortable conversations on race, gender, equality. But on the flip side I’ve noticed an increase in people taking more care of themselves. Exercising more, cooking meals at home, trying and learning new things. Like me writing this to you now is something totally new and did not expect to be doing. But just like with everything else so far this year, I’m just going to go with it and see what happens.
It is tough to live in a world where we feel like we have no control. We cannot plan our lives because there are external forces that are creating a huge impact. From the comfort of our homes when we look out at the world, it is chaos. It literally feels like a movie!

In times like this, it is incredibly easy to allow ourselves to be sucked into the chaos. Without even realizing it, we wake up expecting more bad news. We cannot make sense of it so we just absorb it and before we know it, it just becomes a part of our lives. Let me tell you, pandemics are not normal. Closing borders is not normal. Protests, people dying without cause is not normal.
A very powerful line that really resonated with me came from a Netflix documentary called “Disclosure.” It said; “We cannot be what we cannot see.” How can we live in a world that we can control, a world that feels safe and happy? It comes from each individual, ourselves. If want a world like that, we must create it; starting with ourselves.

Your thoughts create your life: here are some powerful tools to keep sane these days

Not relying on anyone else to make you happy

When we become dependent upon others and allow our emotions to be dictated by others, we are relinquishing control of ourselves. Nobody knows you better than you. Take some time to reflect and make a list of what makes you happy, truly happy. This can be as simple as a delicious breakfast or even calling up your friend for a heart-to-heart chat.

Our thoughts create our reality

Think about this, the things that you say to yourself would you ever say them to your loved ones? We are always so hard on ourselves, why? You have the power to create the life that you desire and if what you desire right now is just some happiness, create those thoughts within you. You are probably aware of energies and energy flow. Think about when you meet someone for the first time and you feel like you’ve known them forever, you feel such a strong positive connection towards them. You are basically feeding off of their energy. If you work to build a happy, positive energy within yourself, that is what people we see.

Reaching out to communities

Isolation can get incredibly lonely. Thank god for the internet, we have access to a humongous community right at our fingertips. Just like here at MyHealthyBangkok, find a community that you resonate with. Use it to separate yourself from all the chaos and find peace amongst people that you are comfortable sharing with and even learning from.

The power of breathing

Most of us are actually breathing incorrectly. When we get caught up with the day-to-day of life we end up having incredibly shallow breathing that comes from the chest. Correct breathing should come from the diaphragm (think your belly). As you are reading this, inhale and fill your lungs (feel your belly expand) and as you exhale empty out all the negativity and junk that you do not need. Just focusing on breathing signals to your nervous system to relax.

Meditating: for ourselves and for others

Meditation is a practice that allows you to detach from everything. No matter which method of meditation you choose to do, taking the time to distance yourself from everything allows you to come back with fresh energy and you can show up better for yourself and for others in your community. Think of it as recharging your battery, just like we do our devices at the end of every day.

It can get overwhelming, on top of everything else happening in the world I am asking you to do something for yourself. But think about it, if you don’t take care of you, who will? In order to be there for the ones you love, to make them feel safe you must first feel that for yourself.

Everything is temporary, this too shall pass. That’s one of the best things about life is that it never remains the same. There is always an opportunity to grow, to learn and to change. Good times are approaching are you ready for it?
